Last held in Dublin 80 years ago, the International Eucharistic Congress is scheduled to take place in the city from June 11th to 16th 2012. Much has changed since 1932, when the 31st International Eucharistic Congress became the biggest public spectacle in 20th-century Ireland.
Most people today don’t even know what the International Eucharistic Congress is. For the uninitiated, it’s a gathering of people from across the world, which aims to highlight the importance of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Catholic Church, advance understanding and celebration of the liturgy, and underline the social element of the Eucharist.
There is a programme of events centred on the daily celebration of the Eucharist scheduled for Dublin’s RDS, but Statio Orbis, the final-day liturgy will be celebrated in Croke Park, Dublin on Sunday 17th June 2012.
Tickets have already been allocated for this liturgy, which will be broadcast on television and online.
Young people have their own dedicated programme, called Youth Space, in which they can choose from such activities as spending a day in the life of an inner-city Dublin Parish, discovering the faith traditions of travelling people, or learning about reconciliation with refugees.
