Witness some exceptional singing at the 54th Cork International Choral Festival. Spanning the May Bank Holiday weekend - the festival begins on Wednesday, the 30th of April 2008. With approximately 85 performances, and choirs from 22 countries on this year’s programme, it’s no small wonder that the event has been instrumental in developing choral music in Ireland.
During the festival, national and international choirs will take part in gala concerts, school concerts, and competitions, thus celebrating all aspects of choral music. The beauty of the event, is that the visitor has the opportunity to see many of the choirs at unexpected locations throughout the city.
This festival is not just confined to these few days in the calendar - the organisers have come up with an amazing initiative targeting today’s youth with the brilliant “Composers in the Classroom”. This year four schools were chosen to benefit from the help of a professional composer in their classroom throughout the year. The end result being - students attend a seminar at the Cork International Choral Festival
and perform their compositions.
The main highlights of the 2008 programme include: Gala Opening Concert featuring Touché, Thursday Night Gala sees Canada’s finest - Musica Intima, take centre stage and on Friday night our own National Chamber Choir of Ireland are in concert. Germany’s Amarcord host “Evocations” at the North Cathedral as part of the Friday Cathedrals Night. Competition is at fever pitch on Saturday night as visiting choirs battle it out for the much-coveted Fleischmann International Trophy. Bringing an outstanding Festival to a close with the Sunday Closing Gala - a grand finale to 5 wonderful days from our International Choirs.
All this singing making you hungry? - This festival is unique, in that it has its very own Festival Food Fair. Sample some mouth watering culinary delights from over 20 local producers, whilst only being a stones throw away from the main events.
