From 12th October-18th October, Galway will the setting for the Baboró International Arts Festival for Children. Gather the kids and head west for what is sure to be a fun-packed week of arts and entertainment…

Devoted exclusively to children and families, the Baboro week long annual festival is sure to be another hit with local and international visitors alike. The programme, which varies from year to year, aims to underline the importance of the arts for young people and their families. A Baboro programme was first produced by the Galway Arts Festival back in 1994 but by 1997 a festival independent of the Galway Arts Festival was born which offered a fully formed multi-arts programme to schools in Galway during the month of October.

This year’s event promises to be the best yet, with 13 companies and 13 venues organised for the weeklong celebrations. Some of the highlights will be a dark opera from Northern Ireland, an entertaining clown from Canada, and dance from The Netherlands. The kids will be thrilled with music, comedy, visual arts, storytelling and puppetry from artists and entertainers from the four corners of Ireland. New to this years line up will be the introduction of an international conference on the arts, hosted by Babaró.

On Monday the 12th October at 10.00am “The Story of The Little Old Man” will be staged at Nun’s Island Theatre whilst over at Town Hall Theatre “Goodbye Mr Muffin” is performed by a theatrical group from Denmark.

A Hedge called Hog: Druid Lane Theatre Mon 12th October, 11.30 am.
Lots of fun and interaction for this show which tells the story of Pio, who lives in a world without imagination. Get the kids to offer her some ideas for a more exciting life.

Beauty in miniature is how this performance can best be described. Exploring the world in miniature, this is ideally suited for both toddlers and adults alike.

Ruth Le Gear:Water That Sleeps: Galway Arts Centre . Ideas on how water holds the memories of what has passed through it. Mixed media exhibition that will entertain and open up the imagination of any child.
