The very impressive Croke Park Stadium is located to the north of Dublin city centre near the suburb of Drumcondra. And if you’re attending an event at ‘Croker’ and planning to stay around the city for the night, there’s no shortage of Dublin hotels nearby.
Croke Park is one of the largest stadiums in Europe, boasting a capacity of 82,500, and is well known for its electric atmosphere - especially on All Ireland Final day. Although it’s home of the GAA it’s no longer just exclusively for Gaelic games. And as well as hosting a concert or two, in 2007 it opened its gates to both rugby and soccer, so many more people get to experience this world class stadium.
Located just off Jones Road in Dublin 3, Croke Park occupies 700,000 square ft of ground. There are three stands: the Cusack Stand, the Hogan Stand and the Davin Stand in the Canal End. There’s also a standing area made up of Hill 16 (Dublin supporter’s favourite spot) and the Nally Terrace.
Whether you’re here for a big game or a concert you’ll probably be looking for Dublin hotels in the vicinity. Jury’s Croke Park Hotel on Jones Road is less than a 10 minute walk away and if close proximity is top of the list then you won’t get better than this Dublin hotel.
Because Croke Park is just north of the city centre it’s within easy walking distance of O’Connell Street so basing yourself here is also a great option. Popular Dublin hotels on O’Connell Street include the 4 star Gresham Hotel - this Dublin hotel has kind of become a landmark on O’Connell Street. Other popular hotels include the 3 star Royal Dublin Hotel on Upper O’Connell Street, Lynams Hotel, the 3 star Academy Hotel and located just off O’Connell Street on Parnell Square you’ll find the Comfort Inn Parnell Square.
To get to Croke Park from O’Connell Street walk towards the the Parnell Monument at the top of the street. Turn right onto Parnell Street and continue onto Summerhill Road. Turn left onto the North Circular Road, and take a right onto Russell Street which leads you onto Jones Road and to Croke Park.
Drumcondra is also a good place to stay in Dublin. Hotels here include the Dublin Skylon Hotel which isn’t too far away while the Regency Hotel & Leisure Centre, although a little further away, is also a good bet. Drumcondra DART Station is just a couple of minutes walk from Croke Park. Alternatively bus routes you can pick up include 3, 51A, 11, 11A, and 16 all service the area.
After the big game and before you retire to your Dublin hotel for the evening you’ll probably want to check out some of the lively pubs and clubs in Dublin city centre - after all Ireland’s capital boasts one of the best party atmospheres in the world.
