Just two weeks ago on 3rd June 2009 Dollymount Strand received the Blue Flag Status for 2009. Mr John Gormley, T.D and Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, presented the 2009 Blue Flag and Green Coast Awards in a ceremony at Dollymount Strand.
Believe it or not Dollymount Strand is Dublin’s only Blue Flag Beach! This alone is reason to visit Dollymount and with summer well in swing what better time to enjoy Dollymount and all it has to offer. The Blue Flag programme has been operating in Ireland since 1988 and is an international award for beach excellence, which Dollymount deservedly received this year.
The famous Wooden Bridge that links Clontarf to Bull Island has a three-mile stretch of sandy beach and dunes on the island’s eastern shore, although the island is located in Clontarf and Raheny, the beach is called Dollymount Strand!
Dollymount Strand is a popular location for people who enjoy walking and recreation. Walking of dogs is also a popular activity but these are to be kept under tight control due to the Wildlife Reserve.
Many a Dubliner has learned to drive on Dollymount strand as it has a firm flat sandy beach during low tide. Today, access by car is limited to a section of the island located near the Bull Bridge and two sections near the causeway at Raheny.
Dollymount Strand is located approximately 5 minutes by DART from Connolly Train Station to Clontarf. Clontarf is also home to the beautiful Saint Anne’s Park and Rose Garden. St Anne’s Park and Rose Garden covers a vast area of 266 landscaped gardens and was once the former home to The Guinness family! There are two golf courses located at Dollymount, The Royal Dublin Golf Club and the newest Saint Anne’s Golf Club. The Royal Dublin Golf Club has played host on many occasions to The Irish Open Golf tournament and has also won many prestigious competitions in the past. Both golf courses offer splendid surroundings and both prove to be very popular among locals, tourists and some high profile names!
