Things to do in Kerry

Muckross House & Gardens

With car hire, you’re just a 20-minute drive from Killarney, Ireland’s premier tourist destination. Here, Muckross House boasts one of the most desirable addresses you could imagine. Set in the 26,000-acre Killarney National Park, with Muckross Lake (one of the three famous Killarney lakes) as a garden pond, the Victorian mansion forms the perfect base from which to explore a landscape that never fails to inspire.

Gap of Dunloe

Sliced through the mountains 2 million years ago by creeping masses of ice, the Gap of Dunloe is the most stunning glaciated valley in western Europe. A narrow road winds its way for 10km around deep lakes between the McGillycuddy Reeks and the Purple Mountain. It’s best if you leave your hire car at Kate Kearney’s Cottage at the entrance to the Gap, and either walk or take a pony and trap between the imposing crags.

Crag Caves

Drive 2km off the N21 after Castleisland and you will find an exceptionally well maintained show cave. Uncovered in 1983, Crag Cave is believed to be more than 1 million years old and is home to a stunning collection of stalagmites and stalactites. Half-hour tours take place regularly (every half hour in summer).

Ring of Kerry Drive

The Ring of Kerry drive takes you on an anti-clockwise route around the Iveragh Peninsula, encompassing 180km of some of the most stunning scenery in the world. Car hire is the only way to experience such gems as Killarney, Kenmare, Sneem, Waterville, Cahersiveen and Killorglin. Highlights include Ladies View in Killarney National Park, Daniel "The Liberator" O’Connell’s Derrynane House, the Gap of Dunloe, and views of the monastic Skellig Michael.

Slea Head Drive

Give yourself a half-day in your hire car to truly appreciate the Slea Head drive, a clockwise route around the western tip of the Dingle peninsula that takes in dramatic sea views and significant archaeological treasures. Starting in Dingle, follow the well-signed route to the most westerly point in Europe before looping past stunning beaches and historical attractions on your way back to the town.
