Places to See in Derry
Museum of Free Derry
The Museum of Free Derry brings to life a turbulent period in Derry’s history, describing how the civil rights campaign unfolded in the 1960s and the start of the Troubles in the early 1970s. Discover more about the Battle of the Bogside, internment, Free Derry and Bloody Sunday through the museum’s archive of more than 25,000 individual items of massive historical significance, largely donated by local residents.
City Walls
They knew how to build walls in the 1600s. Derry’s walls were constructed between 1613 and 1618 to defend the city’s English and Scottish settlers, and they remain completely intact, making this Ireland’s only completely walled city. About 1.5km in circumference, the walls form a walkway around the inner city and give you a great view of the layout of the original town, which retains its Renaissance street plan.
Tower Museum
The award-winning Tower Museum in Derry City is home to “The Story of Derry” exhibit and a display called “Armada Shipwreck: La Trinidad Valencera.” “The Story of Derry” is an audio-visual, interactive display outlining the development of the city from its geological origins to the present day. The Armada exhibition features items recovered from La Trinidad Valencera, one of the biggest ships in the Armada Fleet, which sank off the Donegal Coast in 1588 and was discovered by the City of Derry Sub-Aqua club in 1971.
Sperrin Mountains
The Sperrins are the largest mountain range in Northern Ireland, but often you can have them virtually to yourself. You’ll be glad you booked car hire: Named in the world’s Top 100 Scenic Drives, the route through the Sperrins was praised by National Geographic for its untamed beauty, perfect trails, and idyllic villages.
Benone Strand
Make the most of your car hire and visit one of Ireland’s longest beaches. Drive the Seacoast Rd (A2), 12 miles north of Limavady and 4 miles west of Castlerock, and you will find Benone Strand, a Blue Flag beach that is a popular site for various outdoor activities and a great spot for viewing the North Coast as far as Inishowen in Donegal and even as far as Scotland.
