Christmas is a magical time in Ireland and one of the best places to experience it is in the charming Cork city. Every year, this city attracts people from all over the country who come to witness its Christmas atmosphere and events. With Christmas markets, ice-skating, carol singing, pantomimes and a buzzing festive atmosphere - Cork city is the place to be this yuletide season.

If you want to get into the festive spirit then a visit to Cork city is a must! With some cheap direct flights from cities like Dublin, Belfast, London, Manchester and lots more UK and European destinations, there really is no excuse for you not to come and visit for a while. The Christmas in Cork Festival is jammed packed with festive events this year so let’s take a closer look at what you can expect.

One of the highlights of the festive season in Cork each year is Cork On Ice. It takes place at the Marquee in the Cork Docklands (near Pairc Ui Chaoimh) and runs from the 13th December to the 17th January 2010. New to the ice rink this year is ice-curling - it’s similar to ‘bowls on ice’ but just lots more fun! Check out the Cork On Ice website for more.

The Christmas lights will be officially turned on at Bishop Lucey Park on the 29th of November. For the festival, Grand Parade will be transformed into a wonderful haven of Christmas markets and stalls while Bishop Lucey Park will be magically lit up and called the “Park of Dreams”. The park will be created by Peter Kelly from Brides of Franc, so it’s bound to be something spectacular!

‘A Christmas Celebration on Grand Parade’ will feature Christmas markets where everything from food to crafts can be purchased (it’s a great place to pick up a few stocking fillers!). There will also be plenty of entertainment in the form of carol singers and bands playing Christmas songs to get you in the festive mood. The Christmas Celebration on Grand Parade will take place on the Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays of each weekend in the run up to Christmas, beginning on November 27th.

Of course, Christmas would not be the same without Christmas Pantomimes! Cork has not one but two pantomimes taking place. Aladdin takes place at the Everyman Palace Cork from Saturday 5th of December to Sunday 10th January. However if you prefer ‘Jack And The Beanstalk’, head for the Cork Opera House where it’s showing from the 12th of December to the 10th of January.

‘Hunting for the Wren’ is a dying tradition in Ireland…well almost! In the little town of Carrigaline just south of Cork city, this age-old tradition is still alive and well. It takes place each year on St. Stephen’s Day and is a great family day out with a street carnival, traditional music and dance.
