Waterford Institute of Technology also known as W.I.T is a third level institution located in the beautiful historic city of Waterford in the south east of Ireland. Since its modest beginning as a Regional Technical College (RTC) back in 1970, WIT has gone from strength to strength and is now in the running for university status. Waterford Institute of Technology is one of the largest 3rd level institutes in Ireland. It currently has over 10,000 students from all over the south east of Ireland and beyond.

The college can be found on the main N25 Cork Road - this is where the main campus is located. There are three other campuses’ - the College Street Campus, the Applied Technology Building (in the industrial estate) and the West Campus, which is located outside the city.

It boasts an exceptional number of academic programmes and has 6 main schools - Business, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities and Science. Students can opt for a wide range of undergraduate courses, postgraduate courses to masters and PhD level, part-time, evening courses or adult education courses. International study with student exchanges and mature students also make up the student population at the college.

Waterford IT is now a popular choice with prospective students as it’s also noted for it’s vibrant and exciting student life and has an excellent network of support service for students plus lots of sports, clubs and societies to join.

Waterford Institute of Technology is now highly regarded as a third level institution in Ireland and this was lately recognised by the Sunday Times which voted it ‘The 2009 Institute of Technology of the Year’. The paper recognised the fact that this college has the highest number of graduates employed and it also consistently ranks as one of the top performing institutes in Ireland. For more see here

WIT has continuously demonstrated its excellent performance and success and winning such awards should only strengthen its case for “university status”. This title is something that the college has been striving to achieve since it first made its submission in 2006.

A university in the south east of Ireland would have enormous benefits for the social and economic development of the region. However the hope and determination for a university status continues, as there are no current plans to upgrade any of the applications for university status. Other institutes also applying for university status include; Cork Institute of Technology and Dublin Institute of Technology.
