Still in its infancy, the 4th Drogheda Arts Festival kicks off on Wednesday, the 30th of April, and runs until Bank Holiday Monday, the 5th of May. The Drogheda Arts Festival has an international feel to it with artists from around the world, providing entertainment. Devised, produced and managed by Drogheda Borough Council Arts Office, it caters for all age groups. You can keep the children entertained with no less than three family fun days, starting with the “Fair on Fair Street” on Saturday the 3rd of May, “Traditional Day in Millmount” on Sunday and the ”Grand Finale” on the Monday.
The organisers are true to their word and there really is something for everyone. There’s a wide spectrum of events from exhibitions, to live music on gig rigs to guided tours of the local museum. Performing artists at ticketed events include Trihornophone, Cathy Davey, Steve Cooney and Laoise Kelly, Michael Nyman and his band. Still got some energy in reserve? Party on at the Festival Late Night Club, advertised as a “late night jamming session” - nightly sessions 11pm until late. Or dance the night away in one of the town’s four nightclubs?
It would be a shame not to take a little time out to appreciate one of the oldest towns in Ireland, steeped in history it’s well worth adding Newgrange, Knowth Neolithic Monuments and the Battle of the Boyne site to your itinerary. Another way to escape the hustle and bustle is to visit Beaulieu House and Gardens, Listoke Gardens or Stephenstown Pond and Agnes Burns Cottage.
Feel like an early start to your Sunday morning? Drogheda is one of the few places in Ireland with the traditional Irish sport of road bowling. Or perhaps some of the towns other activities would be more to your liking including golf, angling and various guided walks.
