For a truly traditional way of ringing in the New Year, check out Christ Church Cathedral’s Bells Ringing in 2008 this New Year’s Eve. Wrap up in your warmest winter woollies and let the chimes of these famous Dublin bells carry you into 2008 - to find out more about this wonderful event, Christ Church Cathedral, how to get there, Dublin hotels etc. read on!

As the clock strikes midnight the Christ church Bells ring in the New Year. Dublin’s Christ Church Cathedral is located just 15 minutes walk from the Spire on O’Connell Street. Just head south across the River Liffey and walk past the entrance to Trinity College. Turn west along College Green and walk the length of Dame Street. From here you’ll see the Cathedral straight ahead.

The Cathedral has had ringing bells in the belfry since as early as 1038! During it’s history there have been an increasing number of bells in the tower, 6 in 1670, increased to 8 in 1738, to 12 in 1878 and most recently it became 19 in 1999. When this happened the church became only the 2nd cathedral in the world to have 16 full circle bell peal. Unlike in Carillon Bell Towers, were all the bells are controlled by a single operator who plays a conventional melody; the bell tower of Christ Church Cathedral is operated by a team of bell ringers who perform the Changes (as this form of ringing is called). This event is popular every year, so find yourself a good spot, don’t be late and start New Year’s Day at midnight.
