You’ll be overwhelmed by the amount of eateries in Galway city! It’s got everything from fish and chip shops and cafes, to elegant restaurants. Here’s our little guide to just some of the top places for you to eat out when in Galway city…
The Huntsman Inn is perfect if you’re after some tasty bar food. It’s a bar/restaurant located on College Road, just about a 10-minute walk from the city centre. It serves up a tasty breakfast, lunch and dinner using the finest ingredients. There’s lots of free car parking too.
‘Schooners on the Bay’ is located above the Aquarium in the Salthill area of the city, so it boasts spectacular views of Galway Bay. It has an early bird menu, a seafood menu, dinner menu, a Sunday lunch menu and an extensive wine menu. This restaurant also has lots of free ample parking.
Ard Bia is another superb restaurant in Galway city. It can be found over Tigh Neachtains pub near the Spanish Arch. This 40 seater restaurant is popular for sandwiches and burgers during the day and traditional dinners in the evening. If you get a table close to the window you can gaze at the busy Quay Street below as you eat. During the Summer months you can eat al fresco with tables on the street outside.
Nimmos is also near the Spanish Arch, in fact it’s just behind it. This restaurant serves up something for every taste with a range of Middle Eastern, New Zealand and Irish cuisine on the menu. It has a lunch menu, a dinner menu and a fine selection of wines.
Abalone Restaurant is located on Dominick Street in Galway city. This small, intimate restaurant (about 30 seats) is very busy, so it’s a good idea to book in advance. The proprietor/chef is renowned Alan Williams who takes great pride in the dishes he serves up (mainly seafood cuisine).
For something more upmarket try Oscar’s on Dominic Street, Vina Mara on Middle Street or Kirwan’s Lane Restaurant.
For barfood try McSwiggins Pub in Eyre Street, Monroe’s Pub on Dominic Street or The Park House Hotel just off Eyre Square is also good for barfood.
For traditional fish and chips - you simply have to try McDonaghs Fish & Chip Shop on Quay Street. It’s also got a seated seafood restaurant.
