Nobber
Nobber, in the very north of the county, was the birthplace of Turlough O'Carolan, composer, poet and the most famous of all Irish harpists. While still a child he was blinded by smallpox. Thus he was freed from the labours of work in the fields and allowed to concentrate on developing his musical genius. His family moved to Roscommon where the McDermott Roe family came to recognise his special talents and Mrs. McDermott Roe became his patron for life, enabling him to fully complete his musical studies.
His concerts were acclaimed and the music of 'The Star Spangled Banner' is attributed to O'Carolan. He died on the 25th March 1738.
