About County Cork

Situated in the rugged south west of Ireland, lies County Cork or as it is also known "The Rebel County". It is a popular destination with visitors due to its thriving city and spectacular scenery.

County Cork is located in the south of Ireland and is the largest county in the country, so it's packed with lots of things for you to see and do. Along with its wild rugged beauty, is has a picturesque harbour, lots of clean sandy beaches, three remote peninsulas and some idyllic islands. It is also a county with a wealth of historical and cultural attractions.

Popular attractions in Cork include Blarney Castle and Blarney Stone , Charles Fort , Mitchelstown Cave and Fota Wildlife Park.

 

Cork city

Cork is home to the country's second largest city, which is often referred to the "Capital of the South". Must see attractions in the city include the Cork City Gaol, the English Market, The Shandon Bells, the Ogham Stones at University College Cork, the Butter Museum, the Beamish and Crawford Brewery, the Crawford Art Gallery and St. Finbarr's Cathedral.

South of Cork city, you'll find the beautiful harbour town of Cobh, which was the departure point for 2.5 million people during the famine. The Titanic and the Lusitania were just two of the ships to visit this port.  Another town south of Cork city is the picturesque Kinsale, which is known as the "Gourmet Capital of Ireland".

 

West Cork

If you do visit Cork on your travels, take the time to explore rugged West Cork, which is famous for its wild beauty and home to some popular Irish towns like Bantry and Skibbereen.

 

How to get to County Cork

County Cork is very accessible, as all major roadways in the south lead to Cork city. There are also many bus and train connections from all over Ireland. Cork also has its own international airport , with direct flights to lots of European cities and beyond. And it is the ideal destination for you if you intend to bring the car, as Cork Harbour is served by ferries from the UK and mainland Europe.

Featured Attraction - Cork City Gaol

Cork City Gaol allows the visitor to step back in time and see what 19th/early 20th century life was like in Cork, both from inside and outside the prison walls.
