Yes, you can finally stop deicing the car and start packing away the winter woollies - the first bank holiday of summer is nearly upon us, and it’s time to start planning for a weekend of fun (in the sun? Or is that just being just a little too optimistic?)

Whichever corner of Ireland you plan on visiting this May bank holiday weekend, GoIreland has a range of hotels, B&Bs, and self-catering accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets.

You could head to Limerick for Riverfest 2013, a celebration of the city that crams in live music, a food & artisan craft fair, water sports, fireworks, theatre, a giant BBQ, fashion and the Great Limerick Run.Or you could travel to the northwest for the Cup of Tae Festival, honouring the best traditional musicians in Ardara, Donegal, with workshops and schools of music. Kilkenny has its annual festival of roots music that weekend, and if you like a nice chop, the Roscommon Lamb Festival promises good food and fun. There’s set dancing in Portmagee, a food writers’ festival in Ballymaloe, more traditional music in Dingle and Carna…

We could go on, but we’ll end with one of our favourite May bank holiday events - the Kinsale 7s.

Heineken Kinsale Rugby Sevens

kinsale rugby 7'sAs if you needed another excuse to visit Kinsale, the Kinsale Rugby Sevens celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2013. From humble beginnings in 1998, when just 12 teams signed up for the competition, the event has exploded in popularity to become one of the major attractions for a town that really does not need any more.

The event will see some 80 men’s and ladies’ teams from all over the world descend on Kinsale for three days of exciting rugby. There is plenty of excitement off the pitch too, with a tented village on the club grounds offering food, music, and beer. The action will take place across five playing pitches from 10am to 9pm, before transferring to the party town of Kinsale for the night. The added sweetener of over €25,000 in prizes makes the Kinsale Rugby 7’s an unmissable end-of-season fixture for all rugby players and supporters.
