GoIreland says a holiday swap by 1 in 3 is enough to occupy the spare beds of Ireland this year!

Ireland’s largest online travel agent has released figures showing that if one in three of us who are planning to go abroad this year decided to holiday at home we would create an immediate 40,000 jobs in the tourism sector or we will lose out if we don’t.

Irish people will spend over €5 bn on travel abroad this year. GoIreland has also done new research to show that for the same price of a family holiday abroad, 2 Irish week-long holidays and 2 mini breaks could be taken; leading to greater well-being and year round satisfaction.

Despite recent figures suggesting an increase in foreign visitors to Ireland, more work has to be done to ensure the domestic tourism market performs to its optimum ability according to Mike Webster, CEO of GoIreland.com

“GoIreland.com is now the largest retailer of Irish properties and we can see the pain, especially for the smaller properties outside Dublin and we intend to do something about it for the properties in our network. By offering deals such as €299 for a family for a week or €149 for a family of four for a midweek or weekend break, we will bring Irish people home and make them look afresh at multiple Irish breaks for the same cost as one foreign holiday. Yes, weather is a factor but our foreign tourists see what we have to offer and embrace it and more frequent breaks are seen as a better stress reliever than the traditional weeks in the sun. There is every type of holiday on offer in this diverse island and we need to rediscover that for ourselves” , he added.

The statistics speak for themselves:
32m bednights in Ireland currently at 50% occupancy
55m bednights spent by Irish people abroad
€5.7bn spent overseas by Irish people annually
€2bn of that spend if spent in Ireland will create 40,000 jobs at a fraction of the cost of attracting foreign tourists
