The Brasserie
19 Middle Street, Galway City, Galway
Staff at the brasserie offer a different perspective in good food. They delight in catering for the increasing demand for a combination of individual values and international standards. The Brasserie is constantly working to maintain the high standard of cuisine, and its friendly staff help create a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.
White Gables Restaurant
Moycullen Village, Moycullen, Galway
Kevin and Ann Dunne established the restaurant, at the crossroads in Moycullen village, 8km from Galway. It is housed in an old stone cottage dating back in 1920s. Cooking is traditional and focused around seafood, with time warp classics such as seafood cocktail Marie Rose, poached fresh halibut Veronique and scallops mornay increasing the sense created by the intimate, candlelit interior with its warm red tones and floral lampshades of this being a place apart.
Meat dishes make no concessions to whims of culinary fashion and with some justification, it seems: a traditional roast duckling with orange sauce is among the most popular choices. Details like the fresh flowers, even in the spotless bathrooms, the mint chocolates served with coffee and the professional, attentive service make dinner here feel like a special occasion. The wine list is both comprehensive and exciting with lots of new world discoveries.
Drimcong House Restaurant
Moycullen, Galway
The rampant creativity in the Drimcong kitchen means that the food reaches out to all the senses - if there is comfort in a rich cassoulet, there is rigour in a shellfish millefeuille.
If there is simplicity in a grilled goat’s cheese salad, there is involvement in the avocado and smoked salmon sause served with chicken. Such carefully conceived and artistically presented food makes the senses sing, and it is not an exaggeration to say that a dinner in Drimcong can leave one almost dangerously surfeited with delight.
Goyas And Le Gout De Goya
2-3 Kirwins Lane, Galway City, Galway
Staff at this artisan bakery do not compromise on ingredients, so everything flows out from the classic staples of butter and eggs, from fine couverture and excellent quality fruit. In the evenings, the little café changes names and modus operandi, and Goya’s becomes Le Gout de Goya
The menu is tilted heavily in favour of fish - real scampi and chips, a steaming paella, fish stew, maybe steamed monkfish - accented with some clever revisions of great dishes such as Irish stew.
Rosleague Manor Hotel
Letterfrack, Galway
A delightfully situated Georgian House over-looking Ballinakill Bay, Rosleague has been discreetly converted into a small first-class hotel with central heating, peat fires, private bathrooms, suites, and fine furniture and paintings. Rosleague is family owned and managed. Fresh seafood and home-grown vegetables are a speciality.
Fat Freddy’s
The Halls, Quay Street, Galway City, Galway
Fat Freddy’s is a well-known pizza parlour with a buzzing atmosphere and cheerful food. At weekends in the summertime it will be cranked up to 90, just like the rest of the city.
Donnellys of Barna
Barna, Galway City, Galway
Donnelly’s of Barna is an established licensed landmark located just a short journey from Galway City on the picturesque coastal route to Spiddal. This charming bar-restaurant is synonymous with catering, tradition, and the true spirit of Ireland.
The entire premises is cast in the traditional old-world idiom, with stone, brick and wood giving a nostalgic authenticity to the character of Donnelly’s. The bar has a series of intimate nooks varying in size where the visitor can relax, have a quiet drink, mingle with the locals or enjoy a gourmet meal.
The restaurant, which has a balcony, has a slightly more formal layout with parallel standards of quality, service and atmosphere. In addition to the usual symphony of international dishes, Donnelly’s specialise in locally caught seafood such as plaice and lobster.
