Letterkenny is a charming market town, which began its existence in the early 17th century. Today, it is a vibrant commercial town and a popular stop off for tourists and visitors to the north west of Ireland. Whether you’re passing through or stopping off, make sure you stroll around this friendly town and admire its wonderful architecture in particular the neo gothic St. Eunan’s Cathedral which proudly stands overlooking the town.
Another notable building in the town is Conwal Parish Church which dates from the 17th century as well. The 3 storey St. Eunans College was built in Edwardian style, while the red brick Georgian style Mount Southwell Terrace are also striking buildings.
Letterkenny is a vibrant town where you can explore its wonderful traditional style pubs and
Restaurants. The town comes alive during the weekend and especially during the summer months as it’s a popular nightlife destination in the north of Ireland. The Main Street in the town is the hub of nightlife activity with several nightclubs and music venues located here.
Letterkenny is also a fantastic destination for shopping. Most of the shops can be found around Pearse Street, Canal Street and Church Street while some shops are also found on Main Street. The town has also got a number of shopping centres such as The Courtyard Shopping Centre in the square, the Forte Shopping Centre opposite the Radisson Hotel and the Letterkenny Shopping Centre next to the bus station.
There’s so much to see and do when holidaying in Letterkenny. Visitors can take a walk in the park, go bowling, paintballing or enjoy a round of golf on one of many nearby courses.
Other sights to see in and around the town include; The County Museum, The Library & Arts Centre, Glenveagh National Park, Grianan of Aileach (an ancient fort) and many award winning sandy beaches such as Portsalon or Marble Hill.
When you arrive in Letterkenny, a good idea is to pop into the Tourist Office at the edge of the town (on the Sligo road) and pick up some information on what events may be happening while your there.
Letterkenny is about a 3 hour and 30 minute journey from Dublin or you could get an Aer Arran flight from Dublin to Donegal Airport which takes just under and hour. The airport is located less than an hour from Letterkenny. A journey from Galway will take approx 4 hours while Belfast is about 2 hours away. Letterkenny is also well served by Bus Eireann, which operate a regular service to here from Dublin, Derry and Galway.
