After such a horrible winter, it is only too right that we look forward to those long summer days. Of course once those Summer days arrive, there is nothing better than to head off to the coast and make the most of it.

Our brief guide has a few ideas of where to go…

 

Bundoran, County Donegal

The seaside resort of Bundoran has so much to offer. First of all, there is the Blue Flag Beach where you can enjoy a host of water based activities, for example, surfing, sailing, wind and kite surfing, canoeing, kayaking, swimming and fishing.

Take a stroll along the beach or perhaps The Cliff Walk might be more to your liking. One thing is for sure - the views on either are going to be nothing short of spectacular.

Still haven’t enough of the water - then it’s time to hop on board the Waterbus at the pier on Donegal Bay. This is a guided tour on Donegal Bay, which lasts about 80 minutes.

Salthill, County Galway

This seaside suburb of Galway city is certainly a busy spot. On glorious Summer days, you can enjoy all Galway Bay has to offer as regards water sports. However, there is an alternative when the weather is not too good, as the Leisureland complex is close at hand, with heated swimming pool and children’s amusements.

The so-called “Golden Half Mile” is a busy array of pubs, restaurants, and casinos. Evenings see discos and musical pubs taking over.

Once you have done the walk along the beach you may like to take a pleasant stroll in Salthill Park or Quincentennial Park.

Ballybunion, County Kerry

The family sea side resort of Ballybunion is quite a little treasure trove, with its cliffs, sea caves and coves. There is a sandy beach, great for the kids to build their sand castles, and not too far to get down to the water from here.

The town of Ballybunion is immediately behind the beach, so there isn’t far to go when the hunger pangs start!

For golfing enthusiasts, Ballybunion has one of the best 18 hole golf courses in the country. The course dates back to 1893 and has seen some prestigious events down the years and it goes without saying some of the golfing world’s favourite sons and daughters as well.

Tramore, County Waterford

One of the main holiday resorts in the South East, there is plenty to do in Tramore. The beach brings swimmers of all ages. And the crashing waves bring the adventurous surfers. Of course if surfing is something you always wanted to try, lessons and equipment are available.

There are a host of activities catered for in Tramore, which includes, tin pin bowling, golf, tennis, pitch and putt and horse riding.

Copper Coast Geo Park and Waterford Treasures are 2 visitor centres, which you may wish to take a look at.

Rosslare Strand, County Wexford

Rosslare Strand enjoys the much-coveted Blue Flag Award. The Strand is approximately 10 miles from Wexford town and 5 miles from the very busy Rosslare Europort.

Enjoy swimming, windsurfing, kayaking and sailing, as well as bowling, horse riding and golf.

Places of interest include, Yola Farmstead, which gives a snapshot of 18th century village life, Tacumshane Windmill, Irish National Heritage Park, which takes you back to 7000 B.C., and Johnstown Castle Gardens.
