Galway is famous the world over for its unique and energetic nightlife, there’s probably no city in the world where Irish culture is so evident. There’s plenty to choose from: traditional Irish pubs, trendy bars as well as some top class restaurants. Here’s a few places to check out after the sun goes down.
Busker Brownes
Busker Brownes is located on Kirwan’s Lane, Cross Street and is one of Galway’s best known landmarks. This bar (there are actually 3 bars) and restaurant offers some of the finest seafood and music in the city.
The Skeff
The recently refurbished Skeff Bar is part of the 3 star Skeffington Arms Hotel on Eyre Square in the heart of Galway city. Inside it’s kind of like a medieval church with an old world feel and is a great spot for a quiet drink.
Fibber Magees
Another Galway pub on Eyre Square is Fibber Magees. This relatively new bar is popular with students with DJ’s and karaoke Monday to Thursday (cocktails as well!) and has it’s own 1st floor private party room.
Tigh Neachtains
No stay in Galway would be complete without a visit to Tigh Neachtains on Cross Street in the medieval quarter of Galway. It’s a great venue for traditional Irish music sessions.
The Cellar Bar
The Cellar Bar is located on Eglinton Street in the city centre. It’s gained a reputation for good food and has two bars. Upstairs there’s a more stylish bar while the downstairs bar is famous for its nightly music entertainment.
Fox’s Bar
Fox’s Bar is situated just around the corner from Eyre Square on Forster Street - check out the lovely stone exterior!
Hole in the Wall
This is a great pub, popular with students and for big sporting events, in the centre of Galway on Eyre Street. It’s extremely busy during Galway Races week - the owner is a huge racing fan. You can’t miss it - a thatch roof and flagstone floors inside.
McSwiggan’s Bar and Restaurant
Also on Eyre Street, just off Eyre Square, is McSwiggan’s Bar and Restaurant. Again you can’t miss it with its old style exterior. Inside there’s a traditional décor with quiet snugs, open fireplaces etc. The restaurant is located upstairs.
The King’s Head
The King’s Head is one of the city’s oldest pubs and is situated on High Street in Galway city centre. It features the original fireplaces dating back to the 16th Century as well as old style flagstone floors. It’s well known by both locals and tourists for good food, live music and a great atmosphere.
The Quays Bar
As the name suggest The Quays is located on Quay Street. It has an old world feel to it and is an excellent traditional Irish music venue.
The Roisin Dubh
The Roisin Dubh on Dominick Street is one of the top music venue pubs in Ireland. Over the years various top music acts have performed here and there are live music gigs 7 nights a week.
