The Gate Theatre is located in Dublin City Centre and is attached to the Rotunda Hospital Complex. It’s very easy to get to, if you’re walking just head north along O’Connell Street and you will find the theatre on Parnell Square East, though the address is given as 1 Cavendish Row.
If you’re driving you’ll probably be able to get parking in the hospital car park although you will have to use the western entrance. To get here head west at the top of O’Connell Street along Parnell Street and then turn north along Parnell Square West. You should find the car park entrance less than a hundred metres up that road. There is a fee for the car park but all proceeds go to the hospital.
Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations is one of those all time classics. The story was first serialised in 1860 but it continues to stand the test of time and people continue to flock to presentations of the show.
The story revolves around an orphan boy named Pip, who starts off with humble beginnings but later benefits from financing by a mysterious benefactor to become a gentleman. Throughout the story he pursues the attentions of the haughty Estella for whom he was originally hired as a playmate by Miss Havisham. The themes explored include gratitude and the various problems with social class that were abound in the time of Charles Dickens that are somewhat less obvious today.
The show is being performed in the Gate Theatre from Tuesday the 27th of November to Saturday the 2nd of February. There are shows every day during this period except on Sundays. The shows start at 8pm though there are a number of matinees that are performed earlier in the day. Tickets are priced €30/€28.
