Arklow Information

Arklow is a historic seaside town on the south east coast of County Wicklow. It is steeped in history as it was founded back in the 9th century AD by the Vikings. Arklow was in fact, the site of a bloody battle in the 1798 rebellion.

Arklow is one of the main seaside resorts on the east coast and is beautifully situated at the mouth of the River Avoca, in the extreme south of the county. Fishing and shipping are traditional here. The yacht that Sir Francis Chichester brought around the world - Gipsy Moth III - was built in Arklow shipyard. The town's famous pottery products are exported worldwide.

This is a pleasant town to walk through and you can admire its colourful shopfronts, it's bridge and the streets ornate lighting to name a few. You can also pop in to see the Maritime Museum, which is located in the centre of the town and boasts some recovered artifacts from the Lusitania on display. The town also has an interesting Art Gallery which is located on the Lower Main Street.

Arklow also has a state of the art playground for children, a pitch and putt club, numerous beaches and lots of walk. The area is also a popular spot for shore angling, fishing, boating and sailing.

Attractions to visit closeby include Glenart Castle, Arklow Town Marshes and the last remains of Ormonde Castle which can be seen in the town.
