Birr

Birr is one of Ireland's finest Georgian towns, with many town houses and public buildings of note along its tree-lined malls. Delightful river walks and heritage trails allow the visitor to explore an atmosphere of leisurely elegance in an unhurried fashion. Dominating the town, but integrated with it in a unique manner, Birr Castle Demesne, the seat of the Earl of Rosse for fourteen generations, is open all year round. Its gardens of exquisite plants, rare shrubs and trees are among the best in Europe. The giant shell of the once largest telescope in the world - just one of the scientific wonders of Birr - still adorns the front lawn, Birr is very much part of the hidden Ireland, a gem in an Irish midland setting, a rare place awaiting discovery by the discerning visitor.
