Clonca Church And Cross
Donegal, Donegal
The church on the site of a monastery founded by St. Buodan was built probably in the 17th century but the lintel over the door, with worn carved figures on it, was taken from an earlier church.

In the north-east angle of the church is a grave-slab erected by Magnus MacOrristin (possibly a Scotsman) with a sword and a hurley stick on it.

In the adjoining field to the west is a very pleasing High Cross. On its east face in the Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes, and on the we...

Cooley Churches And Cross
Cooley, Donegal
Outside the graveyard is a slender cross, ten feet high, in a rectangular stone base. As well as the normal perforations, the cross has a hole in the 'head' of the cross.

In the graveyard are the remains of churches, and a small building called 'The Skull House', which is probably a tome-shrine....

Ray Church And Cross
Falcarragh, Donegal
The 16th century church presumably stands on the site of an Early Christian monastery. It has four large round-headed windows in the south was and an undecorated pointed doorway. Inside is a quernstone. Placed standing inside the church is an unfinished High Cross, 21 feet long. It is said to have been carved in the hills to the south and was intended for the monastery on Tory Island.

However, when it was being transported, legend says that it began to rain and St. Colmcille realize...

Carrowmore High Crosses
Culdaff, Donegal

Carndonagh Cross And Carved Pillars
Carndonagh, Donegal
The most important of these is a cross which on one side has interlacing forming a cross and a crucifixion scene above three figures, while on the other side is more interlacing.

Beside the cross are two small pillars, one with a man (Goliath?) with sword and shield, a bird, David and his harp and a curvilinear motif; while the other stone has on it a number of figures, one with a bell and a staff. The cross has been dated to the 18th century but at least some of the carving on the sma...

Fahan Early Cross Slabs
Fahan, Donegal
St. Colmcille founded a monastery here in the 6th century; records testify to its existence up till 1101. The present church is modern, but to the east of the church there is a cross-slab which has been dated to the 7th-9th century.

On one face it has two figures surrounding a cross composed of interlaced bands and on the other face is a cross of similar design. On the north side is the only Greek inscription known from Early Christian Ireland; in translation, it reads 'Glory and ho...
Glencolmcille
Glencolumbkille, Donegal
There may have been an early Christian monastery in the valley where, according to tradition, St. Colmcille banished demons who enveloped the valley in a fog. The most conspicuous remains are the pillars decorated with cross-motifs and geometric designs which are now the 'stations of the cross' of the pilgrimage which takes place on the Saint's feastday on June 9th. The pillars are spread over an area in the valley 3.5 miles long and the pilgrimage takes as many hours to complete.
