A rare name it has many spelling variants such as Mulshinoge, Multinock, Mulchinock, Mullshenogue and Mulshenagh; it is Ó Maoilsionóg in Irish and belongs almost exclusively to counties Kerry and Cork. It occured in the 1659 "census" in Mallow town and in 1714 Father Thomas Mulshinoge, was parish priest of Kinsale; William Pembroke Mulchinock (1820-1864) the Young Ireland poet and author of The Rose of Tralee, was himself a Tralee man. Little known arms are recorded for Mulchinock in the Genealogical Office.
