O'HORA

O'Hora as a synonym of O'Hara is amongst those given by the registrar-general, Robert Matheson. This is not proof that they are true variants of the same Gaelic name. A further fact which would point to their identity is that O'Hora is found almost exclusively in north Connacht, the homeland of the O'Haras; In 1606 the O'Horas were employed, in company with the MacDonnells, MacGuinnesses and MacQuillans, to "prosecute" woodkern in Co. Antrim. There is an entirely distinct sept of Ó hEarchadha which is anglicized as Horahoe, obsolete forms being O'Harroghue, O'Horrochoe, O'Horchoy etc. The latter appeared in the "census" of 1659 as a principal Irish name in the barony of Corren, Co. Sligo, and an O'Hurkoy is among the Sligomen who obtained "pardons" in 1592. Horohoe is a well known name in Swinford, Co. Mayo, area. In the list of synonyms referred to above Horoho and Horaho are reported from Swinford as being sometimes changed to the English names Harris and Harrison. Neither of the latter, is at all common in Connacht, though both are numerous in Dublin and Belfast.
