Enniskillen

Enniskillen is an island town that dates back to prehistory when it was in essence the main highway between Ulster and Connaught. Enniskillen Castle was the medieval seat of the Maguires, chieftains of Fermanagh. A name still frequently found in these parts.

Today modernisation has meant that the loop roads and improved bridges of the traffic engineers, have effectively negated any sense of being on an island. However, as a good shopping centre, with first-rate angling facilities, a lively cultural scene (including a large lakeside theatre) and friendly people, Enniskillen makes a convenient base for exploring base for exploring this lovely watery part of the province.
