Hailed by many as the greatest book of the century, and dismissed by others as obscene, obscure or both, James Joyce's novel Ulysses made Dublin famous throughout the world.
Published in 1922, it was set in Dublin on 16h June 1904 and meticulously recreated the city and its characters as they were on that day, using real locations and real events.
From his home at 7 Eccles Street the book's central character, Leopold Bloom, sets off around the city, meeting friends and going about his business. Out of the trivia of everyday life Joyce created a story of epic proportions. Puzzling in parts, much of the book is hilariously funny and has attracted countless admirers.
Every year on 16th June 'Bloomsday' is celebrated in Dublin with readings and reenactments from Ulysses, visits to locations in the book and 'characters' in costume on the street.<

Bloomsday or not, you can still trace the footsteps of Leopold Bloom with the aid of a guide or a Ulysses Map of Dublin, and at the Joyce Tower in Sandycove, where the book begins, you can find out more about James Joyce and how he managed to write Ulysses without once returning to Dublin.
