Around South City Centre
As the capital and the islands largest and most cosmopolitan city, Dublin makes an ideal introduction to Ireland for any visitor. A defining part of the modern city centre is the area known as Temple Bar. Just south of the river Liffey, this city centre location has been transformed into a cultural quarter full of art galleries, cafes, theatres, colourful shops, photography centres and the Irish film centre. The streets are pedestrianised so you can stroll around the cobblestones at your leisure and soak up the atmosphere.
The more conspicuous reminders of Georgian Dublin are to be found around the beautiful squares and terraces near Merrion Square. Today this area is a tourist haven and few visitors can resist the lively atmosphere and attractive shops of Grafton Street. The street is a social hub for talented buskers and pavement artists and is also home to Bewleys Oriental Café - a pleasant respite for morning coffee or afternoon tea.
St. Stephen’s Green is an idyllic sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of city life. Set on 27 hectares, the park has many statues including memorials to W.B Yeats and James Joyce and numerous gardens and ponds – don’t forget to feed the ducks!!
Visitor attractions in the immediate area include Trinity College, home to the old library containing priceless illuminated manuscripts such as the Book of Kells. The National Gallery, National Museum and St. Patrick’s Cathedral are definite must-sees on your visit while Dublin Castle stands proudly in the heart of this south city location.
