Description
The first mile through Slish Wood follows the shore of Bundowen Bay with, first Florence and then St. John's Island. At this point, stop at boat pier (beyond which the path rises and leaves the lakeshore). To the right, plantations of Sitka Spruce etc., now maturing and being cut. On the left, between the path and the lake the original woodland flora has survived. A way can be followed near the shore to Travers Cottage or take the easier route along the track. A approx. 2.5km/1.5m along the path, pass through a gate on the left and make your way down to the ruined cottage. Continue on over the stream and through a little wood. There is a path on the R leading to a delightful little lake - Travers Lake - surrounded by pinewoods. After a rest here the second part of the walk begins. Be careful at this point to head straight for the lake shore and then follow the shore eastwards. By the lake shore the bog gives way to delightful leafy glades, the haunt of deer, fox and other wild creatures. The primeval vegetation pattern can be found here for it is here that it has survived and evolved. Near the E end of the bog a forestry plantation will be seen. Follow the path leading to Innisfree Island Pier. If a second car is not available at Innisfree, the distance and time must be doubled.
