Initiative and knowledge, handed down through four generations of Walpoles, has seen Mount Usher grow from a mere potato patch in 1860 to one of Ireland's finest gardens of the day.
Description
Description
Mount Usher Gardens date back to approximately 1868. Four generations of Walpoles enlarged and improved them over the years, gathering plants from all corners of the earth. They now cover 30 acres and harbour around 5,000 different species of plants. In his book "Irish Gardens" E. Hyams considers "the garden of Mount Usher to be the most nearly perfect example of the romantic paradise Robinsonian garden. It is entirely successful in combining plantsmanship with layout which idealises to perfection a possible natural world". Paths meander along the stream with its splashing weirs, waterfalls and unusual suspension bridges. It is a garden to delight the heart of plantsmen as well as of the casual visitor.
