Description

Irish history.

Kilmainham Gaol, County DublinKilmainham Gaol is the largest unoccupied gaol in these islands. As such, it gives the visitor a dramatic and realistic insight into what it was like to be a prisoner in one of these strongholds of punishment and correction between 1796, when it opened, and 1924 when it closed. Leaders of the rebellions of 1798, 1803, 1848, 1867 and 1916 were detained here.

The names of Robert Emmet, Thomas Francis Meagher, Charles Stewart Parnell, the leaders of the 1916 Rising, De Valera and a host of others in Irish history are associated with the Gaol. There is a museum on the premises, which can be viewed before the tour of the gaol starts.

Tours may be arranged for visitors with disabilities. Guide dogs permitted. There is a disabled toilet on the ground floor.
