There are three scenic routes into the Barony of Erris - from Westport, from Ballina via Ballycastle and the famous Ceide Fields along the R314 or from Ballina via the main route the N59. Travelling along the N59 the immense beauty of the largest, living, breathing, unspoilt bogland in Europe will greet your arrival. Stop off at the impressive Bellacorick Bog Train and treat yourself to a unique guided tour of Ireland's first wind farm. The Musical Bridge at Belacorick is another original attrition. Here, when one runs a stone along the top of the bridge music is made with each stone having its' own tune! Tales of the fate that befell those who have tried to finish the bridge can be heard locally. Travelling from Westport via Mulrany or Achill to Erris you will encounter one of the most famous walking trails in North Mayo - The Bangor Trail. Fahy Castle, once home of the Irish Sea Queen Granuaile is located near Ballycroy Parish. This vibrant village had the privilege of guarding a manuscript from "The Annals of the Four Masters".
This book is the complete history of Ireland from time immemorial. Ballycroy and the Geesala/Doohoma peninsula provided the inspiration for J.M. Synge's world famous "Playboy of the Western World". Travelling from Ballina along the R314 you can follow the Mayo Sculpture Trail. Stop at the Ceide Fields, Europe's largest stone-age monument. The visitor centre here explains the geology and wildlife of the area and interprets what can be seen. Past Ceide Fields, stop at Carrowteige, an Irish Speaking area and visit the heritage centre. Near to Glenamoy is the picturesque village of Pullathomas with magnificent views over Broad Haven Bay. Belmullet town is positioned between the magnificent bays of Blacksod and Broad haven and is well endowed with shops and dining facilities. Belmullet is the gateway to the Mullet peninsula. A must for visitors to Erris it boasts miles of sandy beaches and majestic cliffs. The calm waters of Blacksod bay contrast with the excellent surf of the Atlantic. There is an excellent "Blue Flag Beach" at Mullaghmore. The allure of the succulent marshland and lakes of Erris entice a rich variety of bird life including some of Ireland's rarest breeding birds. Termoncarragh Lough is an Irish Wildlife Sanctuary on the Mullet Peninsula. The Insihkea islands lie in the Atlantic to the south-west of the Mullet Peninsula. They are of major importance to both resident and migrating birds.
