Nestling on the lakeshore of Loch Lein, Killarney’s lower lake, The Lake Hotel, Killarney, enjoys the most magnificent setting with the truly unique backdrop of the mountains, islands, woodlands and the 12th century McCarthy Mor castle ruins. The Lake Hotel is a four star, family run and owned hotel and has been welcoming guests since 1820 so a long tradition of warm Irish hospitality awaits all visitors.

Awaken with breakfast in the elegant dining room, the Castlelough Restaurant and observe the wild deer stroll across the lawn, unwind over morning coffee in the Sun Lounge and absorb the peace and tranquillity imposed by the presence of the lakes. Wander down the ancient pathways to the castle ruins and be surrounded by the freshest of air and a landscape that is untouched by centuries of visitors and admirers. As the light fades and colours change, enjoy an aperitif in the Devil’s Punch Bowl Bar before tasting the finest of Irish food and reflecting on the abundance of natural beauty in this part of the world.

Staying at The Lake Hotel is like experiencing history. Since 1820 guests have been coming to stay in the hotel to enjoy its unique vista and although additions have been made over the years, a guest relaxing in the piano lounge today could be sitting in the very same spot as Queen Victoria when she visited the region and stayed at the hotel in 1861.

Room Features (Back to top)

At The Lake Hotel, there is a variety of accommodation from which to choose, many guests opt for the lake view rooms given the magnificence of the landscape which is laid out infront of them whilst others prefer the more low key beauty of the woodland areas to the front of the hotel, where the deer roam free. With either choice, the comfort of your surroundings combined with the loveliness of the scenery ensures a relaxing break away from daily life.
The woodland view rooms are quiet, comfortable rooms located in the original building of the hotel and thus have retained the hotels old world charm and appeal. As indicated in their title, the woodland view rooms overlook the front and entrance of the hotel where the wild deer can be seen roaming frequently, particularly in the early morning or evening time.
The Superior Lake View rooms are located in the original hotel building which was built in 1820 and therefore delightful period features such as high ceilings and balconies add to our guests enjoyment of the space. The added feature of a Jacuzzi bath in the bathrooms of these rooms also ensures that relaxation is paramount during a stay at The Lake Hotel.
All Deluxe rooms look out onto the hotel lawn, the ruins of the 12th century McCarthy Mor Castle, which is floodlit at night, and of course the Lakes of Killarney. An additional seating area in each room as well as a balcony with outdoor seating allows for ample space to lounge and relax whilst also enjoying the famous views no matter what the weather.

Nearby Attractions(Back to top)

As you travel along the N71 towards Kenmare, take a detour to see the spectacular cascade of Torc Waterfall. After heavy rains, the water foams and violently falls over the 60 foot rock face. As you come down the steps from the waterfall, you will get to a wonderful viewing point overlooking the beautiful and breathtaking Killarney Valley and Lakes.

Definitely the jewel in the crown of Killarney is its Killarney National Park. Here, you will see herds of Irish red deer roam freely. As you walk into Knockreer Estate, you will notice the beautiful Deenagh Cottage. Built in 1837, it  is now home to a quaint little café and makes a unique backdrop for picture perfect photographs.

Other sights within a short drive of the hotel are The Gap of Dunloe, Ross Castle and Muckross House, Gardens and Traditional Farms.

Other Attractions

Other great destinations in Kerry include Dingle Town, Dingle Peninsula and the The Ring of Kerry. All of which are a pleasant day trip from Killarney.

The Lake Hotel was truly wonderful with fabulous food, lovely people all the way through the Hotel. The staff were so well trained and the Huggard family were great people with all the time in the world to talk. The Deer were awesome and came by a few days while we had breakfast, the lake and surrounding mountains provide a backdrop that cannot be beaten. In short I have stayed many places all over the world but this was one of the most relaxing places i have ever been.

Bar & Restaurant

The Castlelough Restaurant is an impressive dining room of the old style, built as part of the original house in 1820, it has 25 foot high ceilings, large ornate mirrors and cornice work and reminds one of the big country houses of the past when dinner was the highlight of the day and ballgowns and black tie were the norm. Without doubt the most eye catching feature of this magnificent room is the vast windows which span the full room from one end to the other ensuring that all are reminded of the breathtaking scenery just beyond the hotel. Dining in a space with this backdrop is a memorable one, inevitably conversations can die out as guests are drawn again and again to gaze at the natural splendour of the mountains and lakes outside. Indeed the food on offer competes with this stunning vista for attention but with the range of fresh seafood, seasonal meats, organic vegetables, local cheeses and mouth-watering desserts used by our Chefs, as the flavours melt in the mouth, our dishes make themselves noticed.
The Devils Punchbowl Bar takes its name from the stunning glacial lake on Mangerton Mountain set within Killarney National Park, a 25,000 acre oasis adjacent to The Lake Hotel and visible from the bar, restaurant, lounges and majority of bedrooms. This bright and relaxing bar also offers large windows looking out onto the hotel lawn, the ruins of the 12th century McCarthy Mor castle and of course, the lakes and mountains beyond. The bar is always busy for morning coffee and scones, leisurely lunches by guests, locals and passing tourists, the Lake Hotel classic Afternoon Tea in the afternoon and casual, tasty bar food throughout the early evening. There is always something on offer to sate the appetite and thirst at the bar and combined with our friendly and helpful staff, guests come back again and again to enjoy this restful and inviting space.

Leisure activities at the hotel

At The Lake Hotel despite having unparalleled jogging and exercise space just beyond our doors and the 25,000 National Park adjacent to our property, we offer a fully equipped fitness centre and gym. Located on the ground floor and looking out across the lawn, past the hot tub to the lakes and mountains, we hope this view will take your mind off the miles to be run on the treadmill or rowed on the rowing machine.
On the first floor of the hotel tucked away beside the main staircase is the Library. A room reserved for our guests, the Library offers not only a range of books, magazines, newspapers and board games but also three computers for complimentary use by our guests. An ideal space for planning out your day trips, the rest of your holiday in the region or for checking emails, the Library is a warm yet useful space.
