Alcock And Brown Hotel

Three Star

Clifden, Galway Show on a map

Excellent 7.4/10 thumb up

Rated 7.4 by GoIreland customers
(5 ratings)

The recently renovated 3* Alcock and Brown Hotel is located in the centre of Clifden, about 80km from Galway City along the N59.

This 3 star family run hotel is reknowned for its terrific atmosphere, friendly service and superb food. Its central location offers you the chance to explore the region where John Alcock and Arthur Whitton Brown completed the world's first non-stop transatlantic flight in 1919. It's also an ideal location to get away from it all and enjoy the serene and relaxing countryside.

The hotel comprises 19 spacious bedrooms, a Coffee House and Restaurant, two Bars and an Art Gallery. The rooms in the Alcock and Brown Hotel are all family rooms – each has a double and single bed.

All are ensuite and come with a satellite TV, telephone, hairdryer and a tea/coffee tray. The hotel is home to an award winning eatery, Brown’s Restaurant which is popular with locals, tourists and residents alike. Perhaps you could try the seafood which was probably caught locally or anything from the excellent a la carte menu. The hotel also has a full bar.

Alcock and Brown Hotel - Lobby Fire

Description

The Alcock and Brown Hotel is just a stone's throw away from where these two pioneering aviators landed, well… successfully crashed their modified Vickers Vimy IV twin-engined bomber. You can go out and see the exact landing point which is about 3 or 4km from the town. Other attractions in the surrounding area include Kylemore Abbey which is the only Irish home of the Benedictine Nuns. A little further north you can visit Killary Fjord where you can have plenty of fun at the Killary Adventure Company. On the way you may pass through Letterfrack, so while there you could visit the Oceans Alive tourism site.

Off the coast of Connemara there are a number of islands, including Inishbofin, Inishshark and Inishturk, which are all worth visiting if you have the time. For a round of golf you can head over to the Connemara Championship Golf Links which is only 10km away and is as challenging as it is beautiful. Angling and horse riding are also popular activities in the area.

Great central location in Clifden. We were touring in a group of four motorcycles and stayed at the Alcock and Brown Hotel for one night only. The staff/owners made us feel very welcome both when booking in and when in the hotel bar. Clifden is a great little town for a big night out. The Hotel rooms were spotless and more than adequate for our needs. Only problem was, we wished we had more time to stop for longer. Will definitely be back again.

Hotel very basic, no bar available on retiring around 12.30 but no complaints otherwise, staff fairly friendly.
