Although the town was founded as such in the medieval period, the history of settlement in the ara goes back much further in time. A brief tour of the town confirms this. Walking westwards from the Cathedral, you willfirst encountr the Temperance Hall, once a Cavalry Barracks. Bhind the Temperance Hall form the lake shore you can eiw Crannogs - artificialisland dwelling placs.

Next, head westwards towrds the boathourse where you come ot the Town Moat, the only functioning wter filled medieval moat in Ireland.

Contine on towar s the Carmelite Abbey ruins. The original Abbey was founded in 300 by Richard de Burgo. Follow the ocurse of the moat b The Wlks - a secluded 200 year old walkway. As you exit the Walks, on the right you find the Old Parish Churhc, where the moat joins the river.<

Next, make your way eastwards towards Garrybreeda Church ruins and cemetery an the nearby st Bridid's Well. Both of these indicate a very early pagan settlement.
