Dublin 1, DublinPhone: Fax:
Dublin's widest and principal thoroughfare, O'Connell Street takes its name from the leader of the Catholic Emancipation movement, Daniel O'Connell. It has undergone several tranformations since it was first developed in the early eighteenth century by Henry Moore as Drogheda Street. Dublin owes much to Luke Gardiner and to Bartholomew Mosse, who between them planned the transformation of the street into a grand new avenue. Badly damaged in the 1916 Rising and in the civil war of 1922 - 1923, much of the street was elegantly rebuilt in the late 1920's. In 1988 Dublin Corporation revived Gardiner's idea of a central mall, and probably the best way to view O'Connell Street now is to 'island-hop' up the middle and to use the pedestrian crossings for excursions to the left or right. Several of the city's statues and monuments stand along this line.
