The Quoile River - Jane's Shore
Taking a walk along this route today, it is difficult to imagine that before 1957 the Quoile was tidal. An important transport and trading route, the estuary was used by many ships coming in and out of port with cargoes of coal, timber and slate.
The nearby Quoile Visitor centre contains a wealth of information on the Quoile Pondage, which was declared a National Nature reserve in 1970.

Description
Riverside Path - The Quoile River - Jane's Shore
Distance: Approx 2.2 miles, 3.5 kms
Time: Approx 1 hour
Starting point: Lay by / picnic site on the Quoile Road
Leave the lay by and cross the road turn left and walk towards the Quoile bridge. Cross over the main road at the bridge then turn left towards Downpatrick.
After a few hundred yards at a spot called 'Jane's Shore', a public footpath sign directs you from the roadside towards the river. Follow this path along the banks of the River Quoile.
The path continues over timber board walks and through several kissing gates, adapted to cater for the disabled, through open park and agricultural land until it reaches the main Belfast Road.
At this point either return to the starting point by retracing the journey or continue on a circular route back to the lay by.
