Cobh The Queenstown Story
Cobh The Queenstown Story
Description
From 1845 - 1960 over 2.5 million adults and children emigrated from Ireland via Cobh on Coffin ships, early steamers and finally on the great ocean liners. Cobh was the Titanic's last port of call.
Up to 300 naval and commercial ships at a time could be seen at anchor off Cobh during the Napoleonic Wars. Convict ships first sailed from Cobh in 1791 bound for Australia. And from the 1800's - 1950's Cobh was Ireland's main transatlantic port.
On the 11th April 1912 the newly built Titanic called to the port of Queenstown on her maiden voyage. The pride of the White Star Line arrived at Roches Point (the outer anchorage of Queenstown Harbour) at 11.30am.
A total of 123 passengers got on at Queenstown making a total of 1,308 passengers on board as it left Queenstown. There were 898 crew members making a total of 2,206 people on board as the Titanic embarked on her final journey.
