bridges of ross

The return road on the Atlantic (north) side of the peninsula, passes (8 km) the Bridges of Ross, a remarkable product of cliff erosion by the ocean. There were formerly town natural bridges at the entrance to an inlet, but the larger, and more impressive of the two, has been partially worn away, leaving only the thinner arch. The village of Cross Is not far away on the road towards Carraigaholt. Further along are the ruins of Kilballyowen parish church, and Doondillroe, a promontory fort, is also in the vicinity. The spectacular cliff scenery on the road to Kilkee includes a column of rock, known as Bishop's island. On its summit are the ruins of an ancient oratory, which indicates that the column was part of the mainland at one time.
