Archbishop Crolly died during the famine and work on the building was stopped. It began again in 1854 under a new dynamic Bishop, Dr Dixon who appointed another architect, JJ McCarthy to succeed Mr. Duff.
He changed Duff's plan to a purer Gothic Style giving us the lofty twin spires of today's building. Work on the building had again virtually stopped until Dr McGettigan was appointed to Armagh in 1870. He set about the completion of the cathedral and it was dedicated on August 24 1873, the estimated cost now having risen to £70, 000 by 1887

Description
The niw Archbishop Michael Logue was the first Archbishop of Armagh to be appointed cardinal. He had travelled widely across the European Continent viewing the beautifully decorated churches, and so was moved to decorate the interior of Armagh Cathedral.
Prior to this the only decoration had been the Lady Altar, surrounded by a few coloured windows the Grand Organ, Confessionals and Stations of the Cross. Many had complained about its bareness. Cardinal Logue began the internal decoration in 1900 which can still be admired today with the exception of the marble altar which was removed in 1982. A few years later the grand organ was rebuilt restoring the original which had been built in 1874-75.
