A north coast tour from Derry through Limavady passes the famous eight mile stretch of silver sand at Magilligan strand used more than 100 years ago as the baseline to carry out the definitive triangulation ordnance survey of Ireland. Portrush, which stands well out into the Atlantic on a narrow promontory which provides a splendid marine setting. Offshore near Dunluce Castle are small rocky outcrops known as the skerries. From here it is about eight miles past the 14th-century Dunluce Castle to the famous Giant's Causeway. This is formed from volcanic lava which cooled into upright columns, mostly hexagonal. The diversity of shapes and heights has resulted in seeming resemblances to well known objects, and several of the formations are known locally as the Giant's Loom, Wishing Chair, Lady's Patchwork, Giant's Organ, My Lady's Fan, Horseshoe and other names. The most impressive formation of all, reached by the Shepherd's Path, is the Amphitheatre. This has the appearance of a section of a huge coloseum set against the high cliffs with columns of up to 80 feet in height and other basalt formations which resemble seating for giant-sized spectators....
