Running through the western end of the estate is the River Maine, a substantial river, a large part of which can be waded. Chest waders are recommended and a stout wading staff is needed. The river provides nearly 3 miles of unique angling in more attractive surroundings.
Access:
This shall be by the Grand Entrance or White gates, off the Randalstown/Antrim Road. Drivers are requested to keep their cars parked on the hard road where possible.
A stocking programme of native brown trout, dollaghan trout and salmon fry will continue under the Salmonid Enhancement Scheme.

Fishing in Demesne
The Right To Fish
Extends from the mouth of the River Maine to the road bridge in Randalstown, both banks included. 3 miles.
Size
All trout uner 8" shall be carefully returned to the river.
Limit
There is a limit of 2 brace of fish per day's angling.
Dogs
No dogs allowed into the Estate without prior approval from the Estate Office.
Camping
The use of caravans, tents or any form of camping is forbidden.
Fires
No fires may be made.
With the exception of one stretch of the river the fishing is primarily fly water but spinning is permitted when water levels justify, I.e. only when the gauge at the Deerpark Bridge is at 11" or more. Spinning is however permitted above the Weir at the Curragh between the two white posts when the river is below 11" on the gauge. Fly fishing will always take preference over spinning or worming. Rods are asked to respect this rule and vacate a pool in favour or fly fishermen. Shrimp, prawn and flying 'C' are prohibited.
Location
Shanes Castle demesne, the home of the O'Neill family for centuries, lies along the northern shore of Lough Neagh, the biggest freshwater lake in the British Isles. The demesne is probably one of the most beautiful estates in the whole of Ireland, being a mixture of grassland and mature woodlands, with an abundance of flora and fauna.
