Mountain habitat is rare within cities, but the moorland on top of Cave Hill is home to wheatears and skylarks and flowers such as sheep's bit, marsh orchids and wild thyme. On the rugged cliffs nest kestrels, peregrines and ravens that hunt on the heather clad and rabbit infested slopes above the tree line.

Cave Hill Country Park
Description
Cave Hill Country Park encompasses the heath and moorland above Cave Hill, the meadows and stream at Carr's Glen and the woodlands of Hazelwood and Belfast Castle Estate. There are waymarked trails suitable for casual walkers or serious ramblers, with an accompanying leaflet to describe the features of interest along the way. The park is rich in birds and wild plants, and two areas, at Ballyaghagan and Hazelwood, have been designated as local nature reserves. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from vantage points on the hillside. There are several archaeological sites including the remains of a stone cairn, cashel and crannog. The most spectacular is that of McArt's Fort, the highest point on Cave hill - almost 1200 feet above sea level. A Cave Hill Heritage Centre in Belfast Castle explains the folklore, history, archaeology and natural history of the region.
