Sea fishing for conger, dogfish, mackerel and plaice is popular from the rocks and piers all the way up the coast. Boats can be hired at Larne, Carnlough and Cushendall for deep-sea expeditions to catch blockan, cod, conger, dab, herring, mackerel, plaice, pollack, skate, tope and whiting. Trout fishing is excellent throughout the area. Around Carrickfergus, where there are public reservoirs and waters at Woodburn Forest, Dorisland, Copeland and Lough Mourne and also at the Killylane, Ballymullock and Larne reservoirs, the brown trout are famous. Sea trout can be caught on the Inver and Glynn rivers. In most places the season lasts from 1 March to 30 September. For details consult the Department of Agriculture Angling Guide available from HMSO, 16 Arthur Street, Belfast, or from the Tourist Information Centre, 59 North Street, Belfast. A rod licence should be obtained from the Fisheries Conservancy Board. Department of Agriculture permits are sold in local tackle shops. To fish the Larne waters and the Inver and Glynn rivers, a permit from the local club or owner is required.
