The outlet from Lough Mask as far as the village of Cong is known as the Cong Canal. The best fishing area is between Lough Mask and Cahernagower Bridge, a section of water where very large brown trout to specimen weight are caught during March and April. At its outlet from Lough Mask there is excellent dry fly fishing on the Cong Canal in the late evenings. Access to this part of the Cong Canal is by the Inishmaine road, off the Ballinrobe/Clonbur road, about three miles from Ballinrobe. Water levels between Cahernagower Bridge and Cong can drop to a point during summer months when fishing becomes difficult, and that part of the canal sometimes dries out totally. |
