The fishery, two miles east of the Cashel Road, consists of the Gowla river and at least eighteen loughs. Both salmon and sea trout run into some of the loughs and nearly all of them hold stocks of brown trout. There are 4 beats on the river and 8 boats for hire on this fishery.Gowla River
The river is over three miles in length and can accommodate eight rods per day. The salmon in this fishery average five pounds in weight and some of the sea trout weigh in excess of six pounds although the average weight of the sea trout would be around the two pound mark. The river has many good holding pools yet fish often tend to lie throughout the entire length of the river, even in the shallower parts. The sea trout fishing commences around the middle of June and late evening angling, which can be very productive at certain times, is permitted on this river.
Loughanillaun (Gowla Lough)
This is the first lough upstream on the Gowla System and both salmon and sea trout run into the lough from mid-June onwards. The lough is generally shallow but fish may be caught in most parts of it. Access to Loughanillaun is easy as the lough is adjacent to the cashel/Rosmuc road.
Redmans' and Whitemans' Loughs
These two loughs are a short distance upstream from Gowla Lough and both of them have runs of sea trout with the best time for angling being around the middle of July. Access to these loughs is via the village of Lettershinna to which there is a good road but from the village the angler must walk the last few hundred yards to the loughs.
Cahereeshal Lough
This lough holds only small brown trout. It is situated to the north-east of Lettershinna village and shore fishing only is permitted on this lough.
Loughanillaun
This lough is not to be confused with Gowla Lough which is also shown as Loughanillaun on the Ordance Survey Maps. It is the largest lough on the upper Gowla System and a stock of brown trout with the sea trout running into it late in the month of August and through to the end of the season. Access to the lough is via the village of Lettershinna and then a walk of one and a half miles north-eastwards across the bog.
Lough Agilkey
This small lough which drains into Loughanillaun on the eastern side holds a stock of small brown trout.
Kane's Lough
Kane's lough is about five hundred yards to the south-east of Loughanillaun. It holds a stock of brown trout, some of which can weigh up to one pound. The angling on this lake is quite good throughout the season.
Lough Achuss
This small lough lies to the north of Loughanillaun and it holds a stock of small brown trout.
Mannions' Lough (Beaghgivereen Lough)
Mannions' lough is about one hundred yards to the west of the Upper Gowla Bridge of the Recess/Carna road. It holds a stock of brown trout, limited numbers of sea trout and occasionally some salmon. Shore fishing only is permitted on Mannion's Lough.
Glenturkan Lough
This small lough is to the east of the Recess/Carna road and it holds a big stock of small brown trout. Occasionally, some sea trout enter this lough late in the season. Weed growth can become excessive on this lough during the summer months thus rendering fishing difficult. Shore fishing only is permitted.
Killauncrom Lough
This lough is situated to the west of the Recess/Cashel road and holds only small brown trout. Shore fishing only is permitted.
Lurgan Lough
A small lough which is situated to the east of the Recess/Carna road opposite its junction with the Cashel road. It holds a stock of small brown trout and is stocked occasionally with rainbow or brown trout. Shore fishing only is permitted.
Lough Cong
Lough Cong lies a few hundred yards to the north-east of Gowla Lough and it holds a good stock of small brown trout, some of them weighing up to a half a pound. During the letter part of the month of August some sea trout run into this lough. Shore fishing is only permitted.
Lough Nambrackmore
This lough is about one mile due east across the bog from Whiteman's Lough. There are only brown trout in this lough and they tend to be on the small side but occasionally fish of up to two pounds in weight are caught here. No sea trout or salmon enter this lough and fishing from the shore only is permitted.
These two loughs are about half a mile east from Gowla Lough and both of them hold stocks of small brown trout.
