Recess River (upper)
The left bank from McCreedy's Pool to Cappahoosh Lough and the right bank from the junction with the Owentooey River to Cappahoosh Lough. Some salmon run into this river during the month of June and the sea trout run commences in the month of July and can continue to the end of the season. Fishing is usually best following a flood but fish may be caught at most times in the deeper pools in the river.

Owentooey River
The right bank from Tawnaghmore Bridge to a small stream some five hundred yards upstream from the Recess/Maam Cross road. This section of river has some deep still waters and some good holding pools for both salmon and sea trout. Generally fishing is best with a strong West or south west wind. Salmon and sea trout enter this part of the river during the month of July and sometimes even earlier if there is sufficiently high water. It is more convenient to fish downstream from Tawnaghmore Bridge.

Cappahoosh Lough
This is a narrow lough at the head of the Recess River beside the Recess/Maam Cross road six miles from Maam Cross. There are good runs of sea trout into this lough during the latter part of the month of July or even earlier if there is a sufficiently high flood.

Derryneen Lough
This is quite a small picturesque and well sheltered lough and it is easy to fish even in fairly stormy conditions. Salmon run into this lough during the month of July. Access to the lough is easy as it lies alongside the road near the old school at Derryneen.

Shanakeela Lough
This lough is one hundred and fifty yards from the Recess/Maam Cross road just five miles from Maam Cross. From the month of July onwards Shannakeela Lough holds both salmon and sea trout. The lough is a shallow one and the fishing on it can be very good during the last two months of the season.

Oorid Lough
This is the uppermost lough on the Ballinahinch system and it is located alongside the Maam Cross/Recess road about two and a half miles from Maam Cross. It is a large lough and holds both salmon and sea trout from the month of July onwards but the fishing on this lough is usually best during August and September. Lehanagh Loughs and the Owentooey River downstream to the Tawnaghmore Bridge and the left bank of this river downstream to its junction with the Recess River. The fishing here is not for letting.
