The Shannon Region has earned an excellent reputation for Coarse Angling due to the amount, size and quality of its Wild Coarse Fisheries and also the variety of fish species present. These include Pike, Perch, Bream, Roach, Rudd, Tench, Carp, Rudd/Bream Hybrid and Roach/Bream Hybrid and Eels.
In recent years the Shannon Board has developed various venues throughout the Region, new access points and angling facilities such as fishing stands, foot bridges and car parks have been provided to allow tourist anglers easier access to the fisheries. The Region can now boast of several International Match Stretches which are fully utilised by both local and visiting anglers.
With such a vast amount of excellent Coarse Angling Water available within the Region, it is difficult to choose which venue to fish.
In the North Shannon areas such as Drumshanbo, Carrick-on-Shannon and Mohill, excellent Bream and Roach fishing can be found with Pike Angling good throughout the year, particularly in the colder months. Close to Strokestown the Board has developed access to a number of good Coarse Fisheries where Bream up to 5 lbs can be taken.
On the mighty lakes of the Shannon such as Lough Ree, Bream to 11 lbs, Rudd to 3 lbs, Perch, Pike, Eels etc are available or Lough Derg with its 32,000 acres of open water the Angler is offered a wide choice of Angling methods and fish species. While the lakes are vast there are many shore angling locations such as Twomilegate near Killaloe or the ""Inner of Lakes"" at Ballykeeran on Lough Ree near Athlone where Angling access has been developed and angling advisers are available to show you the best places to fish.
In the Suck valley excellent river Coarse Fishing can be had for Bream, Rudd, Tench, Roach and Perch. Again access is good and people of Ballinasloe and other towns and villages in the area will make you feel most welcome.
For the Angler who wishes to fish some of our smaller coarse fishing lakes, Co. Clare is one of the places to visit. With over 270 lakes to choose from and a variety of species. Lakes such as Ballycullinan, where specimen Rudd/Bream Hybrid of over 4 lbs have been taken and Ballyeighter Lough where specimen Tench of over 5 lbs have been caught.
The Region is one of Irelands great Coarse Angling areas and as such the local accmmodation providers cater very well for Coarse Anglers and in most cases provide advice on where to fish and the bait and tackle to use.
