The Shannon Fisheries Board welcomes you to our Region
which provides fishing for all anglers - whether you are a novice with little or no
experience or a well seasoned angler the Region has angling to interest you. Families are
particularly welcome with many interesting things to do apart from angling, such as
cruising the majestic Shannon, visiting old abbeys and castles, hill walking, cycling,
golf, etc. The Board presides over the inland fisheries of the mighty Shannon catchment,
the River Feale catchment in north Kerry and the rivers of County Clare flowing westwards
to the Atlantic. The Coastal boundaries stretch from Kerry Head to Hag's Head (County
Clare). The Board is responsible for the protection, conservation, development, management
and promotion of inland fisheries and the sea angling resource within the Region. The
Boards aims to, protect and conserve fish stocks, water quality and the fishery
environment, develop and enhance fish stocks, and the angling product, assist through
angling development the creation of jobs and bring economic benefit to local communities. In the waters of the Shannon Region there is an abundance of sea, game and coarse fish
which make it one of Ireland's premier angling areas. The Angler may expect to encounter a
variety of fish species while fishing in some of the most beautiful areas in Ireland and
some of the cleanest waters in Europe. Whatever, your angling preference the Shannon
Region can cater for your needs. The Region has renowned coarse fishing lakes and rivers
throughout Counties Leitrim, Roscommon, Cavan and Clare. Excellent Pike angling can be had
on the main River Shannon and its many lakes, which provide probably the best Pike angling
waters in Europe. Wild Brown Trout anglers will find fishing Lough Sheelin and Lough
Ennell in County Westmeath and Lough Inchiquin in County Clare. The lower reaches of the
Shannon and Rivers such as the Feale, the Maigue and the Fergus provide Salmon and Sea
Trout angling. Should you require further information we would be happy to try and assist
you.
Licences and Permits.
All Anglers fishing for Salmon or for Sea Trout must have a Valid State Rod
Salmon Licence for the area in which they intend to fish. Information on the licence and
where they can be obtained is available from the Regional Board Office but are also
available from most Angling tackle shops. When fishing for Brown Trout in Board controlled
waters a permit fee is required. This can be obtained through the Board Office or at local
outlets. No Licence or Permit is required for coarse angling. The Board wishes that all
Anglers will have an enjoyable and memorable angling experience while visiting the Region.
To assist in this, enquiries should be made to the enquiries Board or a reputable angling
adviser as to the local laws and regulations which apply to the waters they intend to
fish. Depending on the type of Angling to be undertaken we would also advise that
reasonable safety precautions are taken, such as the wearing of a life jacket when
boating.
